Twelve years ago, the calls started coming in. "You'vegot to buy a ," urged associates who pridedthemselves on becoming early adopters. They sounded as though theywere talking into a tin can hooked up to the real phone system byyarn, so it was easy to say "No thanks."

Pretty quickly, though, sound quality improved. But then I'dhear from associates who'd been hammered with $500 cell phonebills, sometimes higher still. Nor could anyone make sense of therate plans-things like " charges" seemed toinevitably push a $29.95 per month plan into the stratosphere. So Istuck to my resolve to boycott . Sure, the benefits ofowning a cell phone were compelling-you're never out oftouch, unless you choose to turn the thing off-but there wasno way I would risk my financial solvency just to stay betterconnected.
